Music and Adventure in Michigan – Spirit Bear

While adventuring through Michigan on tour this past winter I had the chance to see some good friends and hear some great music. I pretty typically don’t shut up about my friends and the amazing music they make, luckily they are all starting to produce albums and more delicious sounds for your ear drums. At one point, my favorite Grand Rapids bands (friends) put together a last minute show for myself and all the homies on tour.

Eager to hear my first bit of Spirit Bear, on one of the first nights in town Mike Balmer, Ben Pozniak and Eric Browning treated me to a quick couple of songs. I had found the lyrics to this song titled “Future,” scribbled on a piece of notebook paper, laying on Balmers bed the night before. When I asked him about it, he got a look in his eye that told me this meant something to him and I knew it was gonna be good. So, slowly but surly I am putting together ‘mini’ edits of my brief stay in GR. This one here is the first in what could be many edits to come.

Thanks you for all the musical goodness while I was home for a bit!

Mid in the West Part 2 – Loveland Pass

It was Luke’s last day in town and it was his choice of where we should go ride. After shuttling Loveland pass for the past couple days Luke wanted to return to explore a little more and to share the good snow he had found. For those who have no idea what I’m talking about I’ll do my best to explain…

Mid in the West

A friend of mine recently came out to Colorado to catch the first few weeks of the new season before heading back to Michigan to catch the start of their season. Bringing the Midwest luck with him Luke arrived to a snow covered Denver as we had just received a second fall storm. After an interesting day of attempting to film, a trip to the ER (not for us) and some epic mini shred, Luke still wanted more. So off we ventured through neighborhoods and up mountain sides looking for something, anything that looked like it could help us have fun on our snowboards. Finally, we stopped at the base of a very worn out looking sled hill and Luke giving me the look that says “well, how bout it?” stepped out of the car. Here we are on the edge of the Mile High city, at the base of the Rocky Mountains and of all the places we could have chosen to go snowboarding, we picked this haggard looking hill. Turns out, it was the best pick of the day. Dodging mini boulders and cacti, we dropped in on the sled hill and a blast of nostalgia hits…

The Sailor Kicks – Practice Session 1

Somewhere along the line, a couple of very good friends of mine decided to get together and start making music. When they told me about their band, the Sailor Kicks, I knew right away that this was gonna be good and I hadn’t even heard the music yet. We all pretty much grew up listening to the same music, skated together and went to school together so I thought I knew what to expect, but what I heard was way better!

Paul Gemignani Method Photo

Paul Gemignani is a fellow Michigander from the U.P. who I met last year on the MMW Tour. We had the chance to get together in Colorado with friend and photographer Terry Ratzlaff to try and get some shots. It wasn’t the easiest of days but while looking through SBCM I found out that it paid off. There on page 61 was a method that I recognized and sure enough it was Paul. As far as I know the video never made it out anywhere so I created a short from that day to show to Adam at SBCM.

Pat Milbery’s Snowboard Video Part – A Tribute to Eyedea AKA Mike Larsen

After spending a season filming with Pat, he wanted to use his footage to create a tribute to an influential person in his life who had recently passed, Mike Larsen a.k.a. Eyedea. Picking the track “How Eye One The Write To Think” from Oliver Hart, Pat wanted to construct the beginning of the video as an introduction that, in a way, reflected the pace and feel of the music. The final video has a self written introduction by Pat himself as well as a portrait charcoal drawing done by artist Brian Curan.

The Mighty Midwest Snowboard Camp Tour and Shred Circuit Posters

The past few weeks have brought a handful of new projects to work on. Most recently finished are two posters; one for the Mighty Midwest Snowboard Camp Tour and one for the Shred Circuit.  Be sure to check both of these events out as they are both going to be a lot of fun. The MMW Camp Tour is all about teaching kids how to have fun on their snowboards. Every camper leaves with an arm full prizes after 2 days of shredding with the guest pro coaches. If the Camp is not for you it’s all good because the Shred Circuit is for everyone and both events travel together. Carrying over the same kind of energy and fun from the Camp Tour, the shred circuit is a contest series not to be missed. One winner from each stop will be flown to Winter Park Colorado to compete in the finals.
